When the Subway Works Better Than Expected

A subway system can tell you a lot about a city if you pay close attention to the little things. How do they keep it clean? Are the signs clear? Do they provide accommodations for people with disabilities? Can international travelers understand where to go? Do they offer multiple ways for people from all over the world to purchase tickets and know exactly how much it will cost to get from one stop to the next? Do they have apps that make it easy to track where you need to go, which stop to get off at, and where to transfer?

These are all important questions—questions that should be answered clearly and without hesitation.

The Seoul subway system, officially known as the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, is most often referred to simply as “Seoul Metro.” What I didn’t realize at first is that most locals just call it the subway, or 지하철 (jihacheol) in Korean. Cool, right?
