Lessons from a Generous People: What North Africa Taught Me About Faith and Giving

In the final part of his North Africa series, Thomsen Young reflects on the generosity and hospitality that revealed God’s heart through simple acts of kindness.

The Generosity That Teaches

Each day in North Africa brought something new: the rhythm of open-air markets, the hum of distant prayer calls, and quiet moments of fellowship shared over mint tea. Amid it all, one theme emerged again and again—generosity.

Families with little gave freely to others with less. Their deep commitment to zakat—the act of giving to those in need—echoed Jesus’ teaching about the widow’s offering in Mark 12:41–44. It reminded me that true generosity is measured not by what is given, but by the heart behind the gift.

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his deed.”
— Proverbs 19:17

We had come to share and to serve, but instead we found ourselves being taught. In a place where open discussions of faith can be sensitive, we were met with kindness, curiosity, and respect. Their hospitality reminded me that God’s image is reflected in every culture, and His grace often arrives through the generosity of strangers.

What I Carried Home

This journey was never just about crossing geographical borders—it was about crossing boundaries of comfort, culture, and understanding. To those who prayed, encouraged, and supported this trip: thank you. Your faithfulness helped open doors, build bridges, and plant seeds that I believe will continue to bear fruit for years to come.

Looking Ahead: Cambodia, December 12–22

This December, I will be serving in Siem Reap, Cambodia, helping local believers host The Festival of Love, a large-scale Christmas outreach that draws thousands each year.

If you would like to partner with me through prayer or financial support, your generosity will help extend the reach of the gospel to even more people.
